Gmail is introducing new features to increase email security

  • by

Google is introducing a new encryption technology to further enhance the security of e-mail for businesses. Using this new technology, Gmail users will be able to easily send encrypted e-mails. Google said that to use the new technology, the sender and recipient do not have to install any separate software or exchange encryption certificates. Therefore, the technology is simpler and more user-friendly than conventional encryption methods.

According to Google, the new encryption technology has been introduced experimentally from yesterday, Wednesday. Initially, using this facility, encrypted e-mails can be sent only between Gmail users of the same organization. It will be launched for all Gmail users in a few weeks. This new security system is based on client-side encryption technology. As a result, the organization will have full control over the management of the ‘encryption key’. However, the technology is not completely end-to-end encryption.

Currently, Gmail provides encryption through the Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions protocol. However, to send external e-mails in this way, the recipient has to configure this protocol, which is relatively complicated. This complexity will be greatly reduced if the new encryption technology is introduced.

When writing an e-mail with the new encryption technology, the message will be encrypted only if users enable the ‘Additional Encryption’ option. If the recipient does not use Gmail, he will receive a link where he can sign in to his Google Workspace account as a guest and read and reply to the e-mail.
